INTRODUCTION
The history of Yunnan currency refers to the history of the use of money in circulation in Yunnan Province, China. As early as the 4th century B.C., Yunnan had economic, political, and cultural ties with the Central Plains and Southeast Asia, and its monetary development was heavily influenced by the two regions. From the late Spring and Autumn period to the late Ming and early Qing dynasties, shell coins were mainly used in Yunnan, although it is still debatable whether sea shells were used as currency in the early period. During the Qing dynasty, metal coins such as copper coins and silver taels were mainly used in Yunnan, and the copper produced in Yunnan supplied the coinage bureaus in many parts of the country. In the early years of the Republic of China, the main currency in circulation in Yunnan was the “半开银元”, which was originally a fifty-cent silver coin, while copper dollars and paper money were also in circulation. During the War of Resistance, legal tender was introduced in Yunnan, and paper money eventually became the mainstream. Due to the uneven socio-economic development among different regions in Yunnan, the currency circulation was diversified for a long time. Before the RMB completely dominated the market in Yunnan, even if one currency dominated, there were always other currencies in circulation at the same time.
